Nighttime in Japan
The photographer’s job is not just to portray the person but also to evoke the world that they embody. In many of these photos we see both an internal resolution of what has just transpired along with an anticipation, and perhaps an anxiety, of what is about to come.
The thoughts and feelings are written on the faces in a language that requires more of an empathetic translation than a linguistic one. And we are left to guess what happens next.
